The Cognitive Tradeoff Hypothesis S3 (Ep 1)

I doubt that was the first attempt by the chimp. It was trained to do that. give any human the same amount of time training to do that and I would imagine the results would be very different than trying this "test" for the first time.

I think that the test may be skewed by our focus. The human mind is particularly good at honing in on specific areas-it's a part of our very narrow scope of vision-and that could hinder memorization. The human eye would have to focus on each number, or at least group of numbers, to recognize where they are. Things completely out of the ordinary can pass through the background, and so long as we are focused on the foreground, we will not see it.

Sometimes I miss old times sake, internet is little by little becoming closed to every one. You need money to have internet at home and you will need even more money to access the stuff you like inside the internet. Basically internet is becoming a college in the US.

This type of memory function in short term domain doesn't take into account alternative memory versus language function. If you changed the images to shapes with sides, and increase the sample size ou may find radically different results in humans. I agree that cognitive tradeoff may, in fact, be the evolutionary tradeoff. I disagree that human short term memory is what's lacking. We are associating numbers differently, shapes with sides will give a better hypothesis.

In Frans de Waal's latest book, 'Are We Smart Enough to Know How Smart Animals Are', he writes a bit about how many in the scientific community reacted negatively to Ayumu's memory feat. In the context of the book, (at least the first half), Frans is using this as an example of how limited we have been in defining and testing intelligence. In fact, he points out it was Japanese researchers who first introduced an empathetic viewpoint to studying Chimpanzees (omoiyari?). I am still in the process of reading the book, and I'm not sure if Frans is going to pursue the direction of the Cognitive Tradeoff Hypothesis, but as an applied linguist myself (and in Japanese colleges for the last 35 years), this theory sounds entirely plausible. One possible weak point of the theory though, is how, or if, it accounts for 'dark triad' personality traits among humans — machiavellian opportunists, narcissists, and psychopaths. But then again, chimpanzees also appear to have individually distinct temperaments, so we can presume not all of those temperaments are as 'loving' as that of bonobos. Combined with Dunbar's Number regarding cognitive constraints on social connections (and by implication, rule-driven hierarchies rather than empathy-driven communities), there are all kinds of implications regarding the moral (or immoral) nature of what it means to be a member of homo sapiens. p.s. Come to think of it, it is not just the moral implications that are intriguing. Far Eastern cultures such as Japan, Korea, and China stress the importance of rote-memorization, especially for high-stakes, standardized tests for college entrance exams (the Centa-Shiken in Japan, the Gao Kao in China). It is interesting from an anthropological viewpoint how an emphasis on rote memorization may affect cultural norms and political dynamics as well.

I just had a thought. In the video he says that we may have lost the ability to memorise a number of things and their positions in a split second because we work in groups and can communicate with complex language, but I think we still have that ability, just in the form of language. If we see a sentence, we can snapshot it in our minds long enough to reread it and process it, and then say it out loud, all within a microsecond. I don’t think a chimp, even if it formed a language, could process words as quickly as we do, as it has no reason to. This might sound obvious but it’s never brought up in the video, at least from what I can remember.

This is stupid! You had the same two monkeys coming in doing something repetitive over and over to get their food now take a human day after day doing the same thing over and over to get food do you think they would be able to remember where their numbers were then I bet you they would. And why are not all the chimpanzees doing this? Why are they only two special champions. if this was something that commonly happen all of the chimpanzees should be able to come in there and do the exact same thing for the exact same reward but that's not what you're saying you're saying the two favorite ones that hardly ever make mistakes doing something that they've done repetitively over and over to receive a reward food.

I can see where language gets in the way. The screen flashes 1/2 second and my mind searches 1, 2, 3 my mind sounding it out as fast as one could say it, and remember the position, but by the time i get to three or four, 1/2 second has passed. I suspect to advance significantly passed that, one would have to stop sounding it in their head, as a speed reader reads an entire page in roughly similar time frames.

It is really amazing what chimps can do. However it is never mentioned in the video how long did it take for the doctor to train them to do that. They don't normally have concept of number signs so it had to take some time for them to learn that and also to get better at this. I am pretty sure if Michael spent a year doing that exercise starting with, lets say 40 seconds to memorise 9 numbers and doing it until he can do it without mistake... then shorten by 5 second and so on and so on... after a year or maybe even sooner he would be able to do it at the same speed (half a sec) like the chimp.

While I agree with the trade off i dont think it's due to just having speach and language. Rather the time you spend thinking vs just calmly observing everything around you. We thrive on entertainment and communication of ideas. Just observing the mundane everything around us does not appeal at all. We dont tend to focus on observations. People that do tend to excellence at such memory games.

So let me get this right. You base your whole hypothesis on the fact that some CHLCA ventured down from the trees to the savanna yet you have no proof of this. SO sick and tired of evolution theory yet there is no scientific basis. DNA is a code similar to Binary. A code has a programmer it does not just create it self. Get the programmer/creator = God back in the equation and everything starts making more sense so you won't have to deal with uncertainties.
